What I'm Reading Right Now (11)

Quote of the day:
Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development, who love good music, good books, good pictures, good plays, good company, good conversation - what are they? They are the happiest people in the world. -William Lyon Phelps

During the past week I picked up John Grisham's  'Gray Mountain' book -if there's anything as a slow page turner then this book is it, and after reading six chapters it didn't grab me so I discontinued reading in favour of the next book in the Archer series. I may come back to it after finishing the series -the 3rd book in Jeffrey Archer's griping family saga, The Clifton Chronicles.

Best Kept Secret continues with the story of Harry Clifton (In case you missed it I talked about the first two volumes here and here ), and it provides answers to so many questions, but then again poses so many more. It involves betrayal, loyalty, dishonesty, international crime, and goes to show just how far people will go to take revenge on their enemies, over and over again.

Its a brilliant read, and builds on the suspense from the first two volumes.

So its your turn, what books are you reading?

  1. Great reading choice as I really enjoy Archer's writing and have all the books in the Clifton series

  2. Recentky, I read a couple more of James Patterson's books, Private Down Under and Private India Burning. Both are fast reads as are most of his works, even if not especially memorable. The most recent book I read is 52 Loaves, which coincidentally I posted about today and would recommend.

  3. Yes I agree those who love good music are the happiest of people even though 'good music' is relative. I remember passing a local pub some time ago and I saw some young men dancing - they didn't appear high and that didn't even matter but the fact that they could take a moment to dance and forget the world. What peace!

Btw these books that you read, do you own a personal library where you archive them afterwards or you do a weekly book rental? (If that happens where you are)

  4. I am glad you put aside your slower moving book for this book series you seem to be enjoying. This one sounds awesome. There are so many amazing books in this world, so I have learned to not waste my time on a book I am not loving (sometimes I will try it again at a later date if I am just finding it okay- to see if my mood is different). :)

  5. The Clifton Chronicles sounds intriguing. I can't stand slow reads - they have a tendency to put me off reading for a bit. :/

  6. @Beatrice P. Boyd: That's wonderful, yes he is a great writer indeed. Great choice with the Patterson titles. Many thanks for visiting and sharing!

@Honiilols: Happiness is everything really, well said. I own a small library and prefer to do rentals these days, as there's no space to store too many books. Thanks for stopping by!

@DMS: Ys indeed, there are so many books to read that putting one aside for another means a lot. Its nice to have you here, thank you!

  7. Hmmm. You read six chapters and it was still slow?

  9. It sounds like your switch in reading material was a good choice. I'm reading "People, Parasites and Plowshares" by Dickson Despommier. Why, at Pat's, I'm known as "The Worm Queen." LOL

@susie: Yay, good for you. Alll the best in the new eek.

@Manzanita: Yes it certainly was a good switch. The worm queen...has a nice ring to it. Many thanks for visiting!

  14. Sounds like a great read. Every now and then I pick up a book that is far too pedestrian for me too. I just move on as you did.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  15. Wise, to not keep plowing through, a book that doesn't 'grab' you.

Here, I am reading "The Elegance Of The Hedgehog" and "The Storied Life Of A.J. Fikry"... Both quirky!!! ,-)

  16. I'm rereading an oldie 'Out of Africa" by Isak Dinesen. Its has such beautiful images of Kenya back in the 1920s. Sorry your other book didn't work out but at least you have moved onto better. I have put this series on my to be read list, so thanks for the suggestion.

  17. A slow page turner? Nope. Never heard of that! But life is too short to read bad books. That's what I always say to myself. If a book isn't grabbing me, I move on to the next one.

  21. I just finished The White Spider of Savignac. What a wonderful book. I swear the author's sense of place is as well written as anything on the best seller's list. I was inspired to write when I finished. Write well.

  22. I just finished Natural Radience by Lama Surya Das and am now reading The Handmaid's Tail, by Margaret Atwood. Quite a contrast. :)

  23. I'm like you, if a book doesn't hold my attention I read the ending and decide whether to continue. Almost put down Perfect by Rachel Joyce but after reading the end decide to plow on. Overall not as good as her first, the one about Harold Fry. Heard of it? Now reading one that I was on a waiting list forever. It's the annotated autobiography or Laura Engles Wilder. A picture into pioneer life in US in late 19th century. The book itself is not long but the introduction and all the explanatory footnotes make it a tome. Hope to finish it today.

  39. I just finished reading 'Sins of The Father' in this series and decided to take a break and read something else for a few days, so I'm presently reading 'Death Cure' by James Dashner. It's also a continuation of a series. As soon as I'm done with it, I'll be starting 'Best Kept Secret' to continue the story of Harry Clifton. I'm one step behind you in this interesting, fast-paced series!
