Musings of mine: Rambling Mind on This and That #14

Quote of the day:

I was gratified to be able to answer promptly, and I did. I said I didn’t know. -Mark Twain

The Repeaters

Repeaters are those naughty, not too kind types of people who prefer to make you suffer at every turn. You speak loud and clearly enough but they never seem to hear or understand you at first-or so they'll have you believe. They feign ignorance, pretending not to have heard you the first time -but deep down you know that they understood what you said. You know this because you do it to others too responding with remarks such as "sorry what was that?", when you heard what they said in the first place. But oh no you are not a repeater, not like the other naughty people out there.

Lazy Zebra Crossers

How many kinds of people are there in the world? There are just two kinds of people in the world: Those who virtually race across a zebra crossing, and those who literally crawl. Put side by side, a snail would beat them to the other side. But why do they do it, why would they walk majestically on a zebra (pedestrian) crossing, taking up all the time in the world you ask? Well because you know they no longer have any sense of time and space. You see over here, and I would imagine as with many other places -by law motorists must give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings. Once you step on those lines you are king, you own the road and you shall take your sweet time in walking to the other side. And if it's a dual road, even better. Heck you could even have a picnic on a zebra crossing -with the rest of the road users waiting with bated breath. And the worst part about lazy zebra crossers? They never even acknowledge the poor drivers.

Right Before Midnight

Right before the clock struck at midnight and as the winds howl outside, wrestling with trees and peeled off leaves, it sure is a good time for silent contemplation. Sitting there in a chair, soul inside a body, body under a roof, roof beneath the trees, skies above and the magical wonders beyond. At that point life's importance become magnified and all trivial things compressed and blown away with the wind. Why is the world the way it is? So many questions with little answers. But still one can't help but be thankful for shelter and warmth, for sustenance and well being, for opportunity and the responsibility elevated by the burden of living. And as the world slept, nature kept watch.

Don't Let The Reviews Fool You

Are you one of those people who read product reviews before buying an item? Me too. I do it all the time regardless of which online shop it is. One thing I've noticed though is that no matter how good of a review a product has, there will always be a trail of angry customers because you know, things can and will always go bad for them. As in burning, blistering, flaming bad.

If you are a sock lover, you've been warned.

Update: I have been made to understand that 'Zebra crossing' is a new term to most. If you haven't heard of it you are not alone, and no it's not a bunch of Zebras crossing the road. I believe the equivalent term and one which you are familiar with is 'Cross-walk'.

  1. I'd never heard the term zebra crossing before but quickly figured out what it was. And in the US it doesn't matter if you are in one. Your life is in your own hands crossing the street.

  2. LOL! Like you, I pay attention to reviews, and occasionally write some of my own. It's always interesting for me to read the ones ties to restaurants and hotels. Repeaters - sad, but so true. Great post! Hugs...

  3. One of the things I really like about where I live is how readily most people stop their vehicles to let anyone cross the road even if they are not in a crosswalk and the crosswalk is only a few feet to their left or right but they were just too lazy to go over to it. Seeing a person = STOP. We found this so strange because in the city it's every man for himself mentality. I love small town America.

    1. Carol, that sounds really great that motorists care about pedestrians. Over here it is very common for vehicles to stop once they see anyone standing at a crossing -even in the busy cities.

      Thanks for sharing and visiting!

  5. Okay, I admit it, I am a repeater. Not being lazy, simply not comprehending what I'm hearing. That said, I am having one of "those" days, where the written word is half Greek. I was wondering exactly where you would encounter zebras that you would be concerned with where or how they crossed. I'm not stupid, just having a bout of confusion. It took me a bit to comprehend where you were going with this. Here we call them crosswalks ... that zebra bit sent my mind in a wrong direction. It's funny now, go ahead and laugh.
    Have a good day!

    1. Sharon, I must admit that I did have a laugh, thanks for that. And oh my I should have known it's called crosswalks elsewhere, ah now it all makes sense. I am still laughing though, have a nice rest of the week!

  6. Excellent post, I love the comparisons and the way you hit on some of our everyday actions, nicely done.

I also read the reviews of anything I am considering buying, but I basically ignore the five stars and the one star reviews, it seems to me the three and four star reviewers are more reliable as to the actual product.

    1. Jimmy, I'm glad you find the comparisons worthy.

Reviews are everything and I always go over what's being said about an item before purchasing, and often times go over to youtube to watch the said item. Obviously if something has more negative reviews than positive, then it's a sign to stay away. Greetings and thanks for stopping by.

  8. I cross the road whenever I feel safe to do so, friend Blog ... and when I feel like crossing, I will cross ... walking 2 blocks to work every night at 2245 hrs ... have never been afraid yet ... cuz my street peeps are taking care of me ... Love, cat.

  9. I hate reviews! They are just too subjective. That goes for so-called "professional" reviewers too, like movie critics. I'm my own person and unless there are a hundred bad reviews about something, with zero good ones, I stay away!

Night time is a great time for contemplation! :)

  18. Mike's comment is spot on for life in the U.S. If you are in a zebra crossing, you best get across quickly, lest you be run over.

  22. One of the first things I ask any class is if their teacher warned them he/she'd be out. And I always get the answer "no". Even if the teacher did warn them. Now, half the class will say that the teacher did warn them, but there's always at least one who was not paying attention and did not "hear" it. Repeaters in their teen years.

We call them crosswalks here, and while some people will take their time, I know it can be not a good idea. Even if the light it with them, a speeding driver might come along. I know someone died not too far from my home under just those circumstances.

  23. Repeaters - I am not a repeater!! : )

Zebra crossers - I just heard a while ago that the mayor thinks it is a great idea to fine pedestrians for texting while walking/crossing. I think so too. Big fines.

Midnight - with all that activity going on outside, storm and all... I would prefer to be in bed, under the duvet!!

    Reviews: Don't believe them!! : )

  24. Hi Blogoratti - Zebra Crossings are fine ... I just wish pedestrians didn't just push the button on Pelican crossings ... and then walk - i.e. not waiting. I didn't know there are 5 sorts of crossings in the UK ...

We have one major repeater and that's enough. Also people don't listen or read for that matter ... such is life ...

Reviews ... I'll take with a pinch of salt and if I want or need to get something - then I'll have taken the trouble to find out first ...

Me too - I'd rather be in my bed ... but I'm an early riser, rather than a late nighter!

    Cheers Hilary

  33. Oh, those slow-pokes are certainly dare-devils! Especially in Seattle. Drivers wait for no-one! I never believe product reviews after reading a report that companies hire people to give 'good reviews'. I do make sure that the companies I buy from have good return policies, though! The review you posted was hilarious. x K

  34. Zebrastreifen, as we call it, well. I am all, pedestrian, cyclist, car-driver and I do believe in Germany people go as fast as they go elsewhere using this crossing.
Crazy people take it to annoy "road drivers"!

Just today I bought two sweater in size 38. Yep. Waaay too large. Must be a 42.
Since ages I wonder why they not just throw all items on one pile and put a sign "good luck" beneath.
