Talk about makeovers, a small hamlet in Indonesia -Kampung Pelangi, is gaining a lot of visits from tourists. This former slum was given a rainbow-coloured makeover by its local government spending $22,500, painting 232 houses in the process. The idea was conceived by a 54-year old local teacher, Slamet Widodo who is credited with dreaming up the project, after being inspired by other villages nearby.

  1. Inspiring! I especially love the story of the young chess player but the rainbow billage is a close second. Such a simple, cost effective way to revitalize a community.

  16. Always make me feel at ease when young people prefer chess instead of World of warcraft! Silly perhaps, but there it is! And that village makes me remember a couple of pictures from a village on Ireland, it had been yarnbombed, every inch of metal was covered. All these things softens the world a bit.
    Nice post!!!
