3 Reasons Why Hot Weather is Good for Your Health

Quote of the day:

We need society, and we need solitude also, as we need summer and winter, day and night, exercise and rest. -Philip Gilbert Hamerton

This is one hot summer. I have indeed heard several people blurt this out. Matter of fact, I may have joined in to say so myself at some point or the other. During winter everyone longs for long summer days, sunshine, cold drinks and barbecues. But this? No, no, no. This wasn't what you hoped for?. Really?. You got me there. We humans can never be satisfied. Let us take a brief pause and think of those living in warmer climate all year round. Oh but they are used to it you may say. Do people ever get used to a certain type of weather?. I would think the human body is built to adjust to any type of weather.

But it is not all despair when temperatures skyrocket due to hot and sunny weather. At this point we long for any cooling effect such as rainfall to reduce the heat even for a little while. And there are several ways to beat the heat such as taking a cold shower or other. Climate has and will continue to have an effect on our lives. We have seen climate change become a popular topic in the mainstream. And rightly so as changing climate can have a huge impact on our very survival.

However, there are various health benefits to having warm weather. Wherever you live in the world will determine how your body adapts to the climate. Of course there will be some people more at risk when the weather gets either too hot or too cold. Here are some of the common health benefits of living in warm weather.

1. More Sunlight

With more sunlight and longer days and shorter nights, we are exposed to more sunshine daily. This is great for getting Vitamin D -which the body needs to absorb calcium and phosphate from our diet and which are important for healthy bones, muscle and teeth. But do take care not to burn in the sun and take necessary precaution while in the sun. The right balance can have a positive effect on your mind, and body.

2. Mood Booster

Warm weather is said to boost our moods. It can be as simple as waking up in the early morning with light outside as against waking up in darkness during winter. According to the University of Michigan, the impact of sunny weather can have a great effect on mental health. Spending time out in pleasant weather offers a way to reset one's mindset. This often holds true as I've found being outdoors in nice warm weather has a rather pleasant effect, calming my mind and mood effectively. As small as thirty minutes spent outdoors can go a long way. Exposure to natural light will keep you alert and grounded and may also impact our internal biological clock and sleep cycle.

3. Social Activities

Summer yields a lot more social activities than during winter. Weather and seasonal variations of course has an effect on physical activities. It is all too easy to lose motivation for engaging in social activities during winter, so the hot weather is a welcome break to getting back to being active again.  People often associate warmer weather with pleasant physical activities such as having picnics, barbecues, playing sport, hitting the beach or other.

As the scorching temperature continues as seen in some parts of the world, it is important to stay well and healthy in order not to get sick. Drinking plenty of water, keeping cool, and staying safe in the sun are ways to reduce the health risk on our bodies.

How is the temperature at your location?

Peace. Love. Light*

  1. Hot weather boosts my mood big time! I do love the 4 seasons here, but by April, I'm itching for hot and humid! I just feel happier when it's hot out. :)

  6. I know that many people long for whatever weather it is not. Even as I find the snow to be a bit dreary I maintain that I will take that over hot weather. Hot weather makes me ill. As for sun I burn easily. I need a high number sunblock to be out for any length of time. My mood is usually good so I need no help there. I will admit that I don't go out as often in the winter. At my age a slip and fall on the ice could be a real problem. Another interesting post.

  10. Very positive post :-)At the moment I live in France and the heat here is really annoying me. I once fainted in the street. The vegetation is dry, we are waiting for the rain.

  12. I’m not really a summer person but I’ll be positive about summer as you pointed out. Weather really affects people’s mood. In the hot and humid Japan’s summer, some people look worn out or angry due to uncomfortableness. But of course all are not that bad with many exciting things going on. This summer is forecasted excessive and intense heat wave. I’ll enjoy the current rainy season before summer comes with its full force. Wish you a lovely summer.

  14. Hi Blogoratti - very pleasantly warm ... as I look out over the English Channel having at times seen the moon roam across the clear sky, then disappear as the sun warms the eastern edge of Beachy Head with warm hues and now sparkles the water as a cool breeze comes in ... lucky me I say ... steaming London I've done! Enjoy the outdoors is wonderful - nature at its best in the summer sun ... cheers Hilary

  15. my 2 friends and I have been discussing this very thing about the heat. I live in Florida C is in Wisconsin and M is in Georgia. all of these are in USA.. we complain about the heat and the cold and the rain and the drought... you are right, humans are never satisfied. and we do need the seasons.. thanks for this very insightful look at our heat wave we are 'suffering' in right now.

  16. We are creatures of constant complaints. Too hot and humid, too cold, too damp. I like a medium range of comfortable hot weather but have difficulty with humidity. The weather is always a great topic of discussion as it's changeable but always present.

I appreciate your comment, thanks for visiting my blog.
    Enjoy your day

  18. I think the number one complaint people have has to do with weather. It is something we all have in common and there is seldom disagreement on it. It is always a safer subject than politics or religion.

  19. You're right. This is one hot summer but I am not complaining. I don't normally like summer (more of an autumn and spring type of person) but I do like having the opportunity of wearing short-sleeved T-shirts and shirts. :-)

    Have a great week.

  20. I love the hazy, hot, humid weather. It doesn't last long where I live in New England. Maybe a two or three day stretch before a cool front with warm temps moves in. I don't complain about the heat and humidity. Winter, here, seems to last a good six months. Snowfall is measured in feet not inches. I don't mind the heat and humidity as it doesn't need to be shoveled from the drive and walkways. (-;

  24. You won't hear me complaining about the heat. I only complain in the winter which still haven't gotten 'used to it' even though I've experienced at my entire life!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I had to see this post because I'm one person who hates heat. Sure, some people wake earlier and wake to sunlight, but I am a night owl and sleep during the day, whether it's winter or summer.

As for social activities, who in their right mind wants to be out in 100 F (38 C) degree weather where the feels like temps are life threatening. That's my summer where I live. After all, you can always put on more clothes, but you can't take more off and you have to wear something in public.

Loved your take on this subject, though. Great topic of discussion.

  27. You can give me a million reasons that hot weather is good for your health and I'd still choose autumn and winter. I live in New York and hazy, hot and humid are the pits. Yuck!!! : )

  29. The heat we've been experiencing in the UK has been unbearable for our poor Jack Russell dog. I live on the top floor of an apartment building, there's scaffolding outside my apartment and I cannot open the windows properly. Oppressive and even the fans I'm using are not helping.

Thus, I give the poor dog some mildly warm showers to help her.

If it wasn't for the dog, I'd be fine with it all.

    Cheers and yep, stay cool.

  34. Too hot here right now. My favorite seasons are Autumn and Winter; mostly because bugs are at a minimum or next to none at all. I love to walk, snowshoe, shovel snow and those sorts of things when there aren't gnats or mosquitos around me. Never you mind the ticks, hornets, wasps and bees........ughhh! Besides I like wearing sweaters and jeans and boots (like always being in a gently embrace). LOL There aren't enough reasons to make me like the hot weather. Thanks for trying though.

  35. These are important reasons why the warmer weather can be good for us. Living in California, it's been a very hot summer, and it's not my favorite season, but I try to see the beauty in all the seasons (except for those lizards that the summers bring haha).

  40. I am not fond of the heat...it was 86 here today and very humid. I worked out in all types of weather for years...on days like today I cannot believe that I used to work in in all day.

But I do love longer days, love to be able to set on my porch and read or visit with neighbors, love going fishing, taking our granddaughter to the creek to wade and look for crawdads...just love it all. Also, have always loved hanging out clothes, but am not doing it this summer because of husband's allergies.

  41. I am a teacher and really enjoy the summer as it is a time of break for me. No school! My daughter is very active in sports, so we are busy with that. I enjoy winter as there are no sports!

  44. That's very true ! I am depending very much on light and always go for 2 weeks to Egypt in November to fill me in with Vitamin D. I don't complain about this summer, I am retired and just don't move when it is too hot. That's different when you work. I just came back from Ireland and thought it is very beautiful but nothing for me, not enough light ! Although we were very lucky it was always "hot" 18-19°C and it rained only once a bit.

Summertime is beautiful but it is not my season. I have to be patient, waiting for the extreme hot is going down....Wonderful day to you.

  47. I'm the sort of person who could easily spend every day of the year in the sun soaking up that Vitamin D. It makes you so happy, and I loove it!
