Pondering on The New Year

Quote of the day:
Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each New Year find you a better man. -Benjamin Franklin

Charles Lamb
Of all sound of all bells, the most solemn and touching is the peal which rings out the Old Year.

G. K. Chesterton
The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.

And a new soul it is then. I mean isnt that the whole essence of a new year? Yes i think it is. My friend told me recently-after i had pestered him for his new year resolution, he said in the coming year he's going to try to be a better person(whatever that means).

I guess he was talking about having a new soul, a new outlook of sorts, to be a better man than he used to be. Anyways what i have learnt is that people say all sorts of things on new year's day. For some its just another day on the calendar, but for others its a brand new oppurtunity to start afresh. Where the old life and older thoughts didnt really matter any longer-but just the present day and events.

Nothing sums its all up better than this poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox below.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox
What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That's not been said a thousand times?
The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.
We rise up laughing with the light,
We lie down weeping with the night.
We hug the world until it stings,
We curse it then and sigh for wings.
We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our prides, we sheet our dead.
We laugh, we weep, we hope, we fear,
And that's the burden of a year.

So here i am on a monday morning at work, pondering on this new year that is to come. .the hopes, the dreams, the days, the minutes....

New year of dreams!

  1. Full knee-deep lies the winter snow,
and the winter winds are wearily sighing:
Toll ye the church-bell sad and slow,
and tread softly and speak low,
for the old year lies a-dying.

    Happy New Year,Bro.
