Quote of the day:
Technology is the knack of so arranging the world that we don't have to experience it. -Max Frisch
I know of a certain fellow who recently purchased a smartphone. In his eyes, and from his view, this is the ultimate gadget, the equivalent of a super car going from 0-60 miles per hour in 6 seconds, and with this and that functionality. But in my eyes, this smartphone is humongous -almost the size of a small tablet.I must say that before now, I'd seen the type with random people and I always imagined how in the world it would fit in their pockets, or handbags as the case may be. And although this post isn't about this fellow, let us ponder on the poor souls out there who have to carry such heavy burden around -because an average phone with an average screen isn't just enough.
Seeing as we live in a fast moving world where technology plays a vital role, one could argue that advancement is inevitable. Smart phones, smart cars, smart TVs and smart wristwatches. There doesn't appear to be any end in sight really. But I digress.
If you have a smart phone (who doesn't these days?), you would understand the importance of application programs or apps. They provide a lot of functionality, and tasks -necessary in our ever busy lifestyles. Mobile apps of course come in different forms and on different platforms, from Android, Windows to Apple's iOS. with millions already developed -and dare I say a million or more in development. According to a research by
ComScore, the time spent on mobile apps has seen unprecedented growth in recent times with Facebook at the forefront.
Having said that, here are a few apps that came pre-installed on a new phone I purchased. Gone are the old days of having just the good old calculator and alarm clock, how time flies indeed.
Amazon: Just because ordering items on a smartphone is way cooler. Plus, you get more discounts.
Facebook: Well, a good opportunity to search for old schoolmates from the comfort of a toilet seat and without a worry in the world.
Just Eat: Not just any food, but takeaway at the click of a button, or more like tap of a screen.
News: What better way to stay updated on current events, with each news story coming as a notification. Just because one can never be content with having enough news.
Skype: Basically talk and talk as you like -using wifi or other.
Skype Video: What's Skype without video, right?
Uber: And what better way to get connected to a driver, while stranded on a mountain top with just enough phone signal to summon a ride.
Netflix: And who doesn't want to sit idly, watching the latest episodes on a small screen, with earphones on -shutting out the entire world.
Jokes apart, as far as apps go, we all have a need for them. What apps do you currently use the most?
Peace & Love*

This made me chuckle a little as you'd probably ask how I manage to fit my phone anywhere, let alone my pockets or handbag (my phone case is massive, so I've been told). My most used apps are Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Ebay, PayPal and Natwest :)
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, the wonders of a new phone..:-) I use whatsapp, facebook the most, I think, and some local ones- for buying bus tickets and checking the weather:-)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm new in this world of gadgets. Just got a iPad, and everything you just told sound familiar. And, yes, it's destructive very much, because now I need to learn to work at it fast or not use it at all. As fact, I'm typing right now at the library since my computer's battery broke... anyway, this is indeed the way technology progresses, more applications, programs, but not for everyone and not everywhere we have to use it. I still value just a talk face to face instead of Skype and text.
ReplyDeleteNeko Atsume. Not kidding. I just posted on my blog about it. I am totally addicted. It's simple, joyful and mindless. It just makes me happy in a world of things that are most likely annoying or over stimulating.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the share!
ReplyDeleteI barely use my phone. If I want to watch something I do it on a bigger screen.
ReplyDeleteMy friends tell me resistance is futile, but I do not own one of these phones. I am happy not knowing what I am missing. Just read of a man who walked off of a sea cliff in San Diego, California while looking at his phone...
ReplyDeleteI mostly use apps to access news and public transport information. I've found public transport apps to be invaluable when travelling in a new city or country.
ReplyDeleteMy work is in data protection and IT security, so I am naturally rather picky in my choice of apps. For instance, WhatsApp is a total no-go for me, as is facebook.
ReplyDeleteOn my mobile (still the first iphone, ancient in terms of mobile phones lifecycles) I have very few apps. Pre-installed ones that I do use are the weather app and calculator. The ones I have installed are ebay, XING, public transport in my area, and leo (dictionary). I have precisely one game on my mobile phone, and it is so rare I play that, I could actually just deinstall it and wouldn't miss it.
Apps I can't do without on my phone: My GTBank Mobile app (money needs to constantly move and be monitored), WhatsApp (for chatting with le boo during the day), google drive (for easy acccess to all my documents), uber (my preferred mode of transprotation) and shazam (for when I hear a song I love and need to know who sang it).
ReplyDeleteThe Ultimate Public Display of Affection
I chucked out imo and Instagram this year
ReplyDeleteI use ola, uber and skype
Facebook and what's app no wonder if people don't have it .
I have merriem Webster as well . Very useful at times .
Some really helpful ones. I don't remember how we got by without them.
ReplyDeleteI don't use Skype or Netflix but I couldn't do without Amazon!

If I have to say the true I am happier when I have my smartphone switeched off and I don't use any app! Hugs
ReplyDeleteI can relate ! My phone is capable of things I don't even realize. I only use it to text, read facebook, cnn, twitter, and as a reminder and alarm clock
ReplyDeleteIf I had the amazon app, I would be fighting the shopping impulse seriously. I prefer to go to the online site whem I need something.
ReplyDeleteI have duo lingo, SHealth and of course my bank :)
Until Esmeralda-my tablet suffered a major glitch, I only used my phone for calls, texts, taking pictures, whatsapp and wordpress. Even now, the only new thing I do with it is shazam.
ReplyDeleteBefore I got a smart phone, I was very sure I do not need one. Now that I have a smart phone, I cannot do without one. My friends and I are connected through Whatsapp, Facebook, etc.
ReplyDeleteHaving Netflix installed as an app must be such a (brilliant) distraction haha. My most used app is definitely Instagram!

Who doesn't have a smartphone? Guilty. We do have iPods and Ipads though, and one iPad has smart capability.
ReplyDeleteAh! you need to get instagram installed o! I use instagram, internet explorer and my UC browser often!
ReplyDeleteThere is no signal at my home unless I want to climb a tree or mountain so I have no phone...gasp!...no cell phone, that's right. I have a land line but I have it where I can't hear it ring!
ReplyDeleteI know many would be lost without one.
Sadly I'm not up to speed when it comes to telephones.
ReplyDeleteI have many of the same apps on mine as well, it really is important which ones to have and which ones you will never use. Congrats on the new phone!
ReplyDeleteLoL @ let us ponder at the poor souls who have to carry this heavy burden around. You must go way back in time then, I suppose. People- not me, are quite crazy bout the bigger the better although- I really don't care. I just downloaded Netflix yesterday. But I'd say, IG, if my uc browser is an app and bbm, then, yes. Twitter and snapchat fall somewhere too.

ReplyDeleteMyfitnesspal, Garmin Connet (Fitness watch app), and... well, basically those 2.
The Year called 2015 - My life as the Boss of all
I have lots of apps that I don't even use but I love my iPhone for keeping contact as in phone, e-mails and it takes better photos than my camera.
ReplyDeleteA friend has a new app for her phone for ringtones. One for her husband says "oh,oh, the husband is calling!"
ReplyDeleteReally interesting post...thx for sharing! xx

I actually know a lot of people who don't have a smart phone. :) I hope you have a lot of great adventures with your new phone!
ReplyDeleteHaha. I know a few people with huge phones that can't fit in their pockets. I use my social media apps and Skype often on my phone. Skype video of course! :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, great times we are living in! WhatsApp, Twitter and Skype. Those are my apps!

I love "quizup " and play a couple of rounds while the adverts are on! Whatsapp to send free photos to my son, Facebook just to see what others have been saying, and the weather, to see if it will rain on the dog walk!
ReplyDeleteI love the apps on my phone, they help a lot. I have Instagram, Twitter, and other ones like Amazon, so if I see a book title, I can look it up and find the book. Which is really helpful. I try not to use too many, so it doesn't take over my life so to speak, but just enough to help with remembering things I need to. And for blogging, so I can spend as little time at my laptop as possible. Happy Thursday to you :) x
ReplyDeleteApps make life easier but they drain the battery too fast :)
ReplyDeleteWow I need to get netflix awesome app to make it convenient.
ReplyDeleteI have hardly any apps on my phone - just WhatsApp and an alarm one!

I use a lot viber (is more useful then skype), instagram (to know about my friends life or world life), kindle (to synchronize my kindle with iphone)
ReplyDeleteHaha! I like your views on big cellphones. I don't like them very much. I got the iPhone 5s a week ago. I like it. I use banking apps a lot, followed by pharmacy and shopping. That's it!
ReplyDeleteInteresting app, Netflix is now available at my place, will definitely download it ! :D
