What I'm Reading Right Now #35

Quote of the day:
Enthusiasm is the best protection in any situation. Wholeheartedness is contagious. Give yourself, if you wish to get others. -David Seabury

Some of my earliest reading memories with books involved being fascinated by picture books. This later progressed to mystery novels, the more daring the better. Most especially Enid Blyton's books, which I found fascinating. This progressed to reading all sorts of books, thereby opening up windows to the world, and accentuating the great adventures out there.

This week I am reading a book by English author Julian Barnes, and titled  'The Sense of an Ending'.
Although its just 150 pages long, I dare say that its got as much depth and feeling -if not more, than some books twice its size. Its a story about elderly Tony Webster, and as narrator weaves a tale down memory lane to the time of his youth when he met and befriended some other boys at school, one of whom made a lasting impression on him.

It is a highly brilliant book, and touches on history, love, relationships, sadness and a sense of subdued morality. Definitely a must read.

What books are you reading right now?

  1. Hello. I really relate to the 'Quote of the Day'....enthusiasm is so vital a quality to have. One must never squelch it.
Your book sounds interesting and thanks for recommending it, Blogoratti.
I am presently reading Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. I enjoy his characters and reading about what it was like back in the olden days.

  5. Oooo. I like the look of that one! I have read some of his work before and quite enjoyed it. I must see if I can track it down. Personally, I've just bought the new Jeffery Deaver paperback Solitude Creek. (Though I'm reading Dan Brown's Lost Symbol and I have to finish that first!)

  8. I have read that book. Found it at the library and was intrigued by it. If I recall there were no chapters. If I looked back at my booklist I imagine I could find what year that was that I read it. Currently reading a book called The Flying Circus. It's about barnstorming in 1920 with very early airplanes.

  10. I found this book to be a frustrating read. I got what the author was trying to do and the sentiment. It just took forever to get to the book.

  11. Hi Blogoratti - I've just finished Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier .. and now know about Altarnun and the moors - seeing as I visited there last year and have been writing about them in my West Country sojourn.

The Julian Barnes "Sense of Ending" sounds a fascinating book to read - one I must note .. cheers Hilary
