Why Adversity is Important for Success

Quote of the day:

Adversity is the state in which man most easily becomes acquainted with himself, being especially free of admirers then. -John Wooden

It is often said that fire is the strength of gold, and adversity the test of a man or woman. Adversity can describe a struggle, a difficult or unpleasant situation, a condition marked by a test of our core strengths.  Nothing in life is guaranteed. Our health, ideas, thoughts, love, mobility, choices we make, today and tomorrow, the present and the future included. We are gifted with these things alright but there are no guarantees, and no absolute truths or inflexible realities. Nothing is fixed and there are invariable facts about life. Except the absolute truth that people come and people go and that there are no square circles. A fact that cannot be changed, like the warmth of the sun, or the sparkle of the night stars. Everything about life can be contradictory. The truth can have separate meanings depending on whoever is searching for it. We all have our own truth. But we exist nevertheless, our current path in life dictated by thousands of 'what if' scenarios, we are like characters in a video game and with each move leading to different outcomes.

We fail. We encounter adversity. Just as we all have our own truth, we all have our own dark periods also. And that is as normal as it gets. We fail and we get up. But failing at something can hurt us and leave a deep void not easily refilled. Sometimes success is good but adversity can be a great triumph. And the bigger it is the harder it is to rise up again. There is nothing better than making a comeback form your own decline and defeat. History is filled with men and women who overcame their initial setback. Einstein did not speak a word until he was 4 years old and his teachers thought he wouldn't make anything of himself. And we've all heard of Thomas Edison who failed 10,000 times to create an electric light bulb. And many other such stories thrive around us. We live and learn.

Our troubles don't define us. With different types of adversities -mental, physical, financial or emotional, the aim is not to be overcome by any of it. So keep busy with the knowledge that everything will be fine in the end.

Adversity is important because:

1. When we experience challenging adversity and overcome it we become more stronger and courageous.

2. Gaining strength with each obstacle and problem is a re-occurring theme in life. Being able to rise each time and redirect our energy to positive ideals may help to soar over adversity.

3. Adversity can turn us into a much better and wiser person.

4. Adversity will enhance our weak spots, while sustaining areas of strength and understanding.

5. It teaches us important life lessons.

So no matter what you may be going through, find courage in the little things and areas of life and stand firm and brave in the face of adversity -like a plant growing out of concrete.

Peace. Love. Light*

  3. Adversity ... our Life has had constant "obstacles" and they may have made us "stronger" and more able to "bounce back"... but many years of non-stop "troubles ... have left us not really able to continue... so, in misery we just endure these many (greater as well as "lesser") troubles...
and every thing will be "Fine" in the end... Stacey will be dead...
Too many years of misery .... and it seldom ever lets up...
wishing you and your a pleasant Sunday, good Sir... Stacey

  4. The despair caused by adversity may be so suffocating! The good thing is that the factors, the circumstances that precipitate that state of mind can be separated and dealt with in different ways.

Again… this is another inspiring post, B.

  5. this is very good and I agree with you. especially the first paragraph. adversity can be a good thing but can also ruin a good thing. I am praying the adversity we have in our USA right now will bring us to a better place but I fear it will not.

  6. You have pointed out the reasons that I do not worry about things. A situation has two outcomes... good or bad. If it turns out good I wasted all that time worrying for nothing. If it turns out bad I will have to deal with it to make it better. Worrying accomplished nothing.

  11. But what if you fail again?
For the first time in my adult life I failed a test, a stupid test, far from reality - ISTQB - to be exact. I live reality now, hence I have no one to answer my questions and am afraid - now that I know that system - to fail just yet again.
    Any advise from your side?

  13. My faith and trust in God has seen me through a plethora of adverse times. We do learn powerful lessons in these moments, and I know I've emerged a stronger person from each adversity because I've leaned on the infinite strength of my Lord.
    Blessings!

  16. Well said. I think challenges and struggles can make us stronger and help us to grow in new directions. Everyone struggles with something. Some people, unfortunately, are faced with troubles that are insurmountable.

  20. Easier to go to a higher level from a position of adversity. Not easy to improve further when one is the best at that point of time!!

  21. Adversity surely is shaping of character. What would be great is if one could be shaped by adversity, then have a bit of luck come your way. maybe that's what happened to Folks like J. K. Rowling.

  24. Definitely adversity is important for success but it's important as well the way a person face it!
In some case adversity that makes one stronger could break a person not strong enough...

  30. I love this post. So much truth here.
You must have had a little adversity in your life
to be able to recognize it's value. (smile)

  31. Very well said. I'd rather earn what I achieve by overcoming adversity than just having it handed to me. It makes the reward all the more worth it.

  32. If we never had any adversity in our lives, we would be the poorer for not having overcome obstacles.

  33. That is the perfect picture to go with your subject. Great post. I especially like the sentence that says that everything in life can be contradictory. That is an important point. Failures can often give people insight how to gain success but in others may derail their motivation. It doesn't seem that there is a logical or typical response to how people handle problems. I have seen people derailed by trivial setbacks but rise above catastrophes.
