Should Your Boss Be on Facebook?

Quote of the day:

A generous friendship no cold medium knows, Burns with one love, with one resentment glows -Alexander Pope

It's thursday and man what a day its been. Came across this article on cnn. (from career builder.com) 'should your boss be on facebook'? It makes for an interesting read for all you people out there that've got bosses. Excerpts from the article :

Facebook's been around for almost five years -- a lifetime in the Internet world -- and by now it has become a mainstay of workers who want to kill a little (or a lot) of time updating their statuses and playing Scrabble.
Hidden deep beneath the site's fun, technological distractions, some people are actually using the site for its intended purpose: networking (social and professional).
You know, touching base and building relationships with people -- all things that used to be done in person with awkward phone calls and cocktail-party pleasantries.
At workplaces, online networking has become an effective way for co-workers within the same building or on different continents to connect. Bosses and employees are also friending each other, which can make balancing personality and professionalism difficult.

The Insanity Of Genius

Quote of the day :
There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line
Oscar Levant
(1906 - 1972)

Oscar Levant once said, 'there's a fine line between genius and insanity. I couldn't agree more and come to think of it,some of the greatest inventions in man's history could be said to be moments of pure genius and insanity combined.

There have been varying correlations between 'genius' and 'insanity', people with outrageous thoughts and ideas are often said to be insane.
I mean i still recall the conversations and arguements i've had with friends, you know brainstorming and sharing ideas when all of a sudden you share an idea-and they go 'no it's not possible', or 'it hasn't been done before', 'you can't do that' or some other random replies. But such is life, and i sure have learnt how to take criticisms and it actually helps.

We've all read of the story of the Wright brothers, they built and flew the first airplane. Now imagine yourself as the Wrights in 1905. You've got this incredible, miraculous, uncanny invention, but what do you do with it, how do you sell it?Won't people think you to be insane to claim that you can build a machine that could fly ? They had a brilliant idea, and even though they didn't have all the answers they went on with it without fear or holding back-because of what people would say.

Most genius's or those with high IQ's think on a different scale than the average person, and seem a bit insane.

Leonardo DaVinci: was a great painter, designer, scientist, futurist and thinker. He also had the gift of dyslexia.
One remarkable indication that Leonardo was dyslexic is in his handwriting. Leonardo was constantly sketching out his ideas for inventions. His extraordinary artwork and inovation are proof that he truly possessed the gift of dyslexia.

Socrates: Socrates presented a photo-paraesthesia which enabled him to gaze at the sun for considerable time without experiencing any discmonfort. Socrates also often danced and jumped in the street without reason, as if a freak.

Van Gogh: became mentally ill at 35 years old, and it was at this time that he created his most famous paintings. Some scientists believe that he was suffering from lead poisoning because in all of his paintings, Van Gogh shows rings around any light sources, and seeing rings around light was a very common symptom of lead poisoning. Van Gogh's insanity became gradually worse. He started mutilating himself out of frustration, and at one point cut off his own ear. Convinced that he was not getting any better, Van Gogh took his own life at age thirty-seven, ending his talent and silencing his emotional pain forever.
The list is endless.

Love
There is also a thing line between love and hate and of course a lot of other things. Fill in the blanks if you may. It is very much often said that there is a thing line between this and that.

Take love and hate for instance, the two most tragic emotions or passions if i may call them that.

When we hate, we do so with so much passion and when we love as well, it is the same thing. Sometimes we hate to love something, and vice versa.

Do we really love with all our heart, i mean can love turn to hatred as time goes by due to some unforseen circumstance. Can hatred turn to love along the line. There is a fine line between a lot of things, what would yours be ?

Weekly News Update

The first major casualty of the global crisis occured yesterday .
I'm talking about the forced resignation of the government of iceland due to the effects of the global crisis.
The coalition govt. of the right-wing Independence Party and the Social Democratic Alliance has come to an end. The Prime Minister met with the President of Iceland at 4 pm yesterday 26th Jan 2009 to formally deliver his government’s resignation.

CAUSES
Their banks collapsed last October, the exchange rate collapsed along with them and the government passed emergency legislation to try keep the country going. The banks started to get into trouble borrowing from other banks, and decided that opening up high interest savings accounts in the UK and elsewhere in Europe was a good idea.

Due in part to excessive risk taking, and inadequate management amongst others on the part of their banks, everything crumbled when the global financial crisis deepened. It is indeed a murky future for Iceland as their economy is projected to contract by about 10% this year and next.

Octuplets !In the news today,a US woman has given birth to eight babies, becoming just the second person recorded in the US to have delivered a set of living octuplets.

The US's first live-born set of octuplets was delivered in Houston, Texas, in 1998 to their Nigerian-born mother, Nkem Chukwu.
The seven surviving children of the octuplets born to Nkem Chukwu are pictured with another unidentified child and their mother as they celebrate their 10th birthday in Houston, Texas, 20 December 2008

  • One baby died about a week later - but the surviving children celebrated their 10th birthday in December.

My Current Music Playlist (January)

Quote of the day: :

Without music, life is a journey through a desert
 Pat Conroy

The month of January is coming to an end this week. So far so good right? Resolutions and all..

Music is a great way to relax, and of course different faces and people respond to music in different ways. But all in all,it's always great to listen to music.
I've always enjoyed listening to music as far back as i can remember, i mean i like it a lot (can you tell),as i seem to listen to a wide range of genres, as long as the song sounds nice to my ears.

So my playlist these past few days has comprised mostly of the following artistes:

1. Jason Mraz
2. Nickelback
3. Estelle
4. John Legend
5. Akon

My Review

But it's been songs from Jason Mraz's current album (We sing.Wedance.We steal things.that i've kept on repeat for the most part.
The first single 'i'm yours' has been nominated for Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Best Male Vocal Pop Performance at the 51st Grammy Awards comming up next month.

The title of the album refers to a piece of art by David Shrigley which caught Mraz's attention while he traveled through Scotland.

Song's like 'i'm yours', 'Live High',Make it Mine',and so on, make it a very nice album to be playing in the background at work,at home,on a plane and wherever.

Taking Care of Your Personal Finances #1

Quote of the day:
To open a shop is easy, to keep it open is an art-Chinese Proverb

Hello eveyone,so far so good with the new year isn't it, as the month rushes to a closing end i can't help but wonder about the world economic meltdown and it's travails.

As the global financial crisis soars, and with companies declaring loss after loss amid weakening demand for commodities including oil, which still hovers over $42.90 per barrel as at today.

Global Crisis?
The global financial crisis is an ongoing issue which has put a number of countries into a recession and the major stock indexes into a downward spiral.

One may now start to ask, what really is going on?. Companies have filed for bankrupcy, there has also been company mergers as well as job losses in the millions  worldwide. It is indeed a time for somber reflection.

With slowing revenues companies that have declared losses include Microsoft (which is to cut 5,000 jobs in the next 18 months), Nokia, Samsung, Intel (they are closing some older factories in the U.S. and Asia, displacing as many as 6,000 employees, not all of whom will lose their jobs), Lg Electronics,Ebay amongst many other companies.

We all know of that saying 'saving for the rainy day', right? I think the rainy days are indeed upon us people. As this isn't just your normal drizzle of a rain, literarily its raining debt and job losses so to speak. So you may ask yourself, where do i fit in all these and how do i brace myself for the tough times ahead.

If you haven't started now is the right time to begin to  do the following :

1.  Define wants and needs
In economics class, we were taught about the scale of preference. An itemized list of things according to priority. What this means is that you set your most wanted things to the least wanted things to satisfy your wants (hope my memory is still good as i try to recall that economics class).
Anyways, put in today's happenings, what this means is that you should only buy things that you really need (can't do without),
like food, groceries etc. Things that you want (luxury items), like a new car, shoes, bags, wristwatches, gadgets can all wait for now.

2. Save every Penny
If there's something you should do different this year, its to save every little money that you can lay your hands on. It not only helps to build up you

bank balance, but also trains you to be a saver. You have to become frugal if you aren't already.

3. Cut back spending
Start cutting back on your weekly spending expenses. Buy less phone call cards, and now that fuel's gotten cheaper-that helps too, also look for bargains whenever you go out shopping, etc. The aim here is to  save as much as you can on the cost of goods and services.

4.Rules
Always seek for new avenues to improve your earnings by not putting all your eggs in one nest.
And lastly remember warren Buffet's (Richest Man in the world right now)
Quote -Rule No.1: Never lose money. Rule No.2: Never forget rule No.1.

So as you go about saving, do remember that the rainy days are upon us people. Goodluck!!

T.V Series

Straight to business. There are a few t.v series that i watch off and on (Lost, HIMYM,House,Heroes et all) and believe me there are loads of them out there.
One of my favs is Lost, and the season V premiered on tuesday(21st) in the US.

Storyline

After Oceanic Air Flight 815 tears apart in mid-air and crashes on a Pacific island on September 22nd 2004, its survivors are forced to find inner strength they never knew they had in order to survive.

But they discover that the island holds many secrets, including a mysterious smoke monster, polar bears, housing with electricity and hot & cold running water, a group of island residents known as "The Others," and a mysterious man named Jacob. The survivors also find signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th century sailing ship called The Black Rock a
nd the ruins of an ancient statue, as well as bunkers belonging to the Dharma Initiative -- a group of scientific researchers who inhabited the island in the recent past.

As the second part of Season Three opens, Jack seems to have gained the upper hand, as Ben's life literally rests in his hands. His demands are simple -- release Kate and Sawyer as prisoners of "The Others," let them safely return to the island and he'll stay behind. But does Jack have a hidden agenda? Kate finally made her romantic decision between Jack and Sawyer by choosing the smitten con man -- but were her feelings for him genuine?

HIMYM
How I Met Your Mother is a comedy about Ted (Josh Radnor) and how he fell in love. It all starts when Ted's best friend, Marshall (Jason Segel), drops the bombshell that he's going to propose to his long-time girlfriend, Lily (Alyson Hannigan), a kindergarten teacher. At that moment, Ted realizes that he had better get a move on if he too hopes to find true love.

HOUSE

HOUSE, an innovative take on

the medical drama, solves mysteries where the villain is a medical malady and the hero is an irreverent, controversial doctor who trusts no one, least of all his patients.

DR. GREGORY HOUSE (Hugh Laurie), devoid of bedside manner and dealing with his own constant physical pain, uses a cane that seems to punctuate his acerbic, brutally honest demeanor. While his behavior can border on antisocial, House is a brilliant diagnostician whose unconventional thinking and flawless instincts afford him a great deal of respect. An infectious disease specialist, he thrives on the challenge of solving medical puzzles in order to save lives.

Obama:Inauguration Buzz!

photo: Coutesy Corbis

As the whole world gears up for the sweaing in of the 44th President, the first African American at that, as many as 2 million people are expected to crowd into the area between the Capitol, the White House and the Lincoln Memorial as Obama takes the oath of office.

They are throwing a $160 million party, the most lavish ever, for Barack Obama's presidential inauguration today (tuesday). Many sites are offering live streaming of the event, in what is turning out to be the biggest party of 2009. The inauguration is only hours away and i can imagine the number of people glued to their computer screens and t.v's right now.

Security
In addition to Secret Service, the security effort will involve 8,000 police officers from the District of Columbia and other jurisdictions, 10,000 National Guard troops, about 1,000 FBI personnel, and hundreds of others from the Department of Homeland Security, the National Park Service and U.S. Capitol Police.

Another 20,000 members of the National Guard are ready to respond if there is an emergency, according to outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

First 100 days

From bank bailouts to financial stimulus packages, to meeting with world leaders, getting the public on his side, Obama's first 100 days will go a long way in deterrming just what his administration is all about.

He's facing the intensity of problems similiar to those that Franklin D. Roosevelt faced in 1933. Assuming the Presidency at the depth of the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped the American people regain faith in themselves. He brought hope as he promised prompt, vigorous action, and asserted in his Inaugural Address, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Today will not be forgotten for a long time to come. It will be remembered in the history books no doubt about that.

From me to Mr. Obama-It's best wishes to you and your family as you step into the White House.
Best wishes for the rest of the world !
