Last year, yours truly managed to read around 30 books- which is no mean feat considering the fact that those hours could've have been utilized elsewhere. But I do enjoy devouring books. Settling down in a cosy spot, oblivious to the world, lost in plot, gripped by protagonists and villains. Looking back now, my total tally appears insignificant -and the challenge is to double the numbers this year.
I often do my reading and writing to music -but not all the time. 'What is the best music to listen to while reading?', asks The Guardian -which is running a survey that explores the pairing of music and literature. You can check it out.

The book I'm reading for the week is titled 'The Good Earth', by Pearl.S.Buck. The story is set in China, right before the revolution. It centres around a peasant farmer named Wang Lung, and chronicles his relationships with his father, wife and children over years of need and poverty. It is soaked in cultural influences, and the author manages to spin a very poetic work which I find refreshing. I am enjoying the book so far.

Impressive 30 books - I am reading a book about dreams.
ReplyDeleteI read the Good Earth a long time ago. It was a good read. Right now I'm reading "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr.
ReplyDeleteI didn't read as much last year as I would have liked. Wil do better in 2016. My faorite books are that are inspirational, that teach me something or heighten my growth somehow. Righ now I'm reading about the magic of tidying up. Sounds shallow, but it is something I need. Happy New Year.

ReplyDeleteI first fell in love with The Good Earth when I was 10 and have re-read it many times since. Ms. Buck grew up in China, her parents were missionaries.
ReplyDeleteJust finished reading Walk In Their Shoes: Can One Person Change the World by Jim Ziolkowski, I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai and am currently reading Galileo's Daughter by Dava Sobel. All good, enlightening and fascinating in their own ways.
I cannot listen to music while reading. I find it disturbing. I love to travel with the words. I am currently reading PEACE FROM BROKEN PIECES.

ReplyDeleteWhen reading, I don't want music or any other "noise" around me. I can read on the train only when the reading material is in a different language (English, for instance) than what people speak around me (German, Turkish, often Hindi, Spanish or Russian).
I don't know this book. We're currently rereading books of our youth together with our son. The author Zbigniew Nienacki. These are stories full of adventure and older times with their history. Even 12th century!

ReplyDeleteHi Blogoratti - What an interesting book - especially as I see that Pearl Buck was brought up in China ... thanks for highlighting it. I have to settle to read/scan through a few books that probably need that treatment ... so they can take themselves off my list of TBRs! I have one I want to read by next week about the European Union and Britain "On the Edge: Britain and Europe" by Hugh Dykes and Brendan Donnelly ... we are living in interesting times re Europe. Lately I'm having trouble finding books I can get into. I checked three out of the library earlier this week, but tried to read two of them and gave up. They just didn't grab me in. The third is another mystery by Louise Penny and I'm not sure I'm up to being sucked into it right now. Facing a big painting project here at home, maybe that's why I didn't start any new books. Last year I read 69 so you can see I do spend a lot of time reading. At the rate I've started this new year I doubt I will match that number for 2016.
ReplyDeleteI am currently reading nothing, and I am a bit grumpy about it. My most current book was an audible: A Banquet of Consequence by Elizabeth George. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I agree, 30 books is a great accomplishment. I didn't to a great job of keeping track of the books I read, but I'd estimate it was around 25 or so. I'm currently reading Club Dead. It's the 3rd or 4th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I saw the first couple seasons of True Blood, but somehow missed the rest. So I figured I'd read the books and catch up that way.

ReplyDeleteThe premise of this books sounds interesting. And yay to the 30 books!:) The last books I've read are The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and Stephen King's The Tommyknockers which are both great.

Just finished Blood Hunt by Ian Rankin. And before that I read his Even Dogs in the Wild (which I got for Christmas) I'm aiming to read at least 20 books this year but I'm very impressed with your 30!

I never read the Good Earth but I saw the old movie twice. It was such a beautifully moving story that I believe I could watch it a 3rd time. I loved the old movie in black and white and I don't know if there is a recent one.
I imagine you are having a difficult time putting the book down.
I read The Good Earth as a teenager and was horrified by some of the atrocities written about in that book. Someday I ought to read it again to see what my reactions would be now!

Today, Implan to talley them as all the titles were written down and it includes e-books as well as hardcovers/paperbacks. Living Within walking distance to a public library has drastically increased my reading.
ReplyDeleteCurrently I am reading Elizabeth George's latest Inspector Lynley novel called, A Banquet of Consequences. There is nothing quite like settling down with a good read and some hot tea!
I have not read that book but have always heard good things about it! Hope you enjoy it! I'm not a book reader but my husband is...and usually has a few books going at the same time! (which I've never understood!)
