Quote of the day:
If you shut up truth, and bury it underground, it will but grow. -Emile Zola
Its not often that I read a book centered around cryptography -writing and breaking codes, so coming across this particular book proved specially intriguing. The writer is Chinese author, Mai Jia, who has managed to conjure quite a compelling and breathtaking story, and in reviews he is said to have created a unique genre that combines meta-fiction, with code-breaking and historical contexts.

The book is titled 'Decoded', and it is Mai's debut novel, though not a detailed spy thriller it has its highs and lows. The story is historical and revolves around Rong Jinzhwen, from a family of outstanding academics. His mental abilities abound for the most part of the book, discovered as a genius from a young age, one does not really get a sense of the main character even till the very end, as the story delves into historical abstractions, hidden contexts, manipulations and selfless love.
It is an unusual read and may prove to be a hard one to put down once started.

Mostly been reading children's literature lately, in my role as a teacher. I love some of those stories very much. Did just finish The Taste of Apple Seeds, a romantic German novel by Katherina Hegena translated into English. I enjoyed the sense of place that featured prominently in the story.
ReplyDeleteInteresting sounding book. I'm into a little bit of light reading right now after a few historical non-fiction reads. Enjoy your weekend.
