Start Your Reading Year Off With Great Books

Quote of the day:
There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self.
-Aldous Huxley

The new year is a great starting point to pick up on your reading. With the effect of the holiday season worn off, its definitely a great resolution to set the tone for the remainder of the year. Now, consistency is key in empowering your reading habit. You may have received book gifts so now is a good time to actually read each one, do not allow them gather dust on your bookshelf. Being busy is certainly no excuse, as seen with these six tips to help you read on a busy schedule, you can think of it as having a companion by your side, one that leads you on a special journey; seemingly weaving and riding high the waves of time.

Now without planning to, my reading this month has been mostly self help books which tend to be easier to read. I note a few key points in my mind, and go about the day and week initiating and expand upon each one. I believe the main point of a self help book is to steer you to a certain path, a rite of passage if you will, but it most certainly won't finish the journey for you unless you have the will to change. If you have the will to change, you will have the will to grow,

So what books are you reading right now, and what are your views on self help books? Do they have any lasting effect on you or inspire you to change in any way?

Books that I'm reading:

Author: Kerry Patterson, etc
Influencer : The Power to Change Anything by Kerry Patterson & Others

Author: Jen Sincero
You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life

Have a splendid new week!

Peace. Love. Light*

  5. Having read 'Feet in the Clouds' a few times I'm now enjoying Richard Askwith's new book Running Free for the first time.

    It's a "runner's journey back to nature".

  6. I always seem to read much more in the first half of the year than the second. Currently I'm reading science-fiction (Proxima). Up next is historical-fiction (The Red Queen). My last was non-fiction (Severed). I've read very little along the lines of self-help.

  7. Wonderful post - loved the quote.
Unfortunately, I am not reading anything at the moment, but when I pick something up it will probably be a self-help type book. Yes, they do have a lasting effect on me, particularly one I recently finished: Playing Big by Mara Mohr.

  8. Loved You Are a Badass! One of the best self-help books I've read in the past few months is Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. Quick read, very positive. I find self-help to be quite balancing and motivating. I think we get so much negative input from the world at large, I find it important to balance that out with positive: through selected reading and meditation, time in nature, etc.

@Paola Lauretano: That's great, it must be that good to have you going back to it.

@Gwil W: Brilliant one it seems, and just checked it on Amazon. Anything that relates to nature is always a win-win, so to speak. Greetings!

  17. I am reading "Shakespeare" by Bill Bryson. The only self-help books I have ever read are to do with DIY projects, vegetable gardening and painting in watercolours. I find this sort of practical self-help book pretty useful.

  20. True true... I'm currently reading 'Talent is Overrated' by Geoff Colvin and 'The last Sultan' by Robert Greenfield. I'll check out the books you mentioned. Thanks for sharing. I think self help books are great. However, some come across as too formulaic or worse still offer no insightful process on how to effect said change. I do agree with you comments on noting key points and going from there.. Simple and effect strategy. Do have a lovely week as well.

  21. Love the heading and I agree, I have so many bookcases on such different topic I read every night before I go to sleep, I have one for detective stories that keep on going, I have one for fun and loving books, I have one for the Eternal/spirituality, and have one for History, mostly from Historian and Holocaust survivors, I usually read these and then spirituality to soothe the pain they lived. I love books more than movies more than TV in fact I don't have cable I will occasionally buy DVDs of series that I like lol

  22. I remember a wise gentleman telling me (when I was a teenager) that no matter what, I needed to make time to read every day. I listened. I don't do self help books, but I do read scriptures and inspirational talks every morning and evening. Between, I'm constantly reading at least one fiction book, and sometimes a history (for research), or a how-to, or a be-better-at book. I find reading helps me sleep, and it keeps me from imploding while dealing with little ones all day long.

  28. Hi Blogoratti ... I've got rather fed up with self-help books - but have read them. I've just come across English Andy Puddicombe and his Head Space site ... which I haven't properly investigated, but spotted his 10 minute TED talk about Meditation ... that was fascinating ...

Books I've been reading Patrick Leigh Fermor - brilliant .. his trilogy - two done and so much to learn about ... and Nicholas Crane's British Landscape - which was very informative too .. but I spent longer with Fermor - fantastic story telling. I look at so many other things ... never ending learning ... cheers Hilary
