The homeless population in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, has reduced to the barest minimum (Pictured above-a homeless native couple). This is thanks in part to the Canadian city's new policy that mandates housing for anyone who's spent close to 2 weeks in a shelter or on the streets. It has become the first city in Canada to officially end homelessness, by adopting the “Housing First” plan, whereby homeless people are first given a place to live, before tackling the underlying causes of their homeless.

I like the Canadian approach to homelessness - first tackle that, and take the rest from there. It is probably much easier and makes more sense to help people fight alcoholism and other illnesses and problems when they have somewhere to stay.
ReplyDeleteI wish our beloved country would adopt this approach....it is well.
