Poem: What Happens When a butterfly Flies

Quote of the day:

Metamorphosis has always been the greatest symbol of change for poets and artists. Imagine that you could be a caterpillar one moment and a butterfly the next. -Louie Schwartzberg

A picture of butterflies

The butterfly effect came to mind when writing this piece. The idea of a small cause having a large effect -basically cause and effect. A lone butterfly flew in through my window and decided to stay, hence the idea behind this poem.

What happens when a butterfly flies
Celestially through an open window?
On a hot summer day
Surely a sight for sore eyes

Wings flapping dexterously
Establishing a unique pattern of movement
Both lucid and implausible to the eye
Like a performance by Khatia Buniatishvili

My scrutiny intensifies, and my eyes cognizant
Watching it float across the room
It perched nearby showing off its colours
A dance to secure its rhythm and dominance

What happens when a butterfly flies
The small cause and effect of sudden appearance
Poised to unlock a hidden door to another life
Small change and different outcome despite its size

What significance does it bring forth though?
A possibly prelude, a ripple effect, answers to life
Half way across the world in distant lands
The precision of hopeful wings aglow.

Don't you desire to be a butterfly for a day
To be free to view the world from a vantage point
To glide and weave through obstacles with little or no effort
To be consistent in a world in disarray.

But what a dream, which is far from reality
I am neither a butterfly nor is a butterfly me

What happens when a butterfly flies
It conquers alone
It is not at fault
Perched high and away from prying eyes

Have a nice week!
Peace. Love. Light*

  1. beautiful poem and I don't think I have ever had a butterfly come in the house.. I call them flying flowers and they do lift the spirits for a moment

  2. A thought-provoking poem. On the eighteenth line should the word be "possible" rather than "possibly"? Just curious that's all.

  4. Nice! A butterfly is like the gentlest of breezes or a wisp of a dream.

  5. They sure fly all their own, creating what they will when flown.

  7. Just got a flash memory. I think from a television program. Something about a story where a little girl fell asleep and dreamed she was a butterfly. When she woke up she couldn't remember whether she was a girl dreaming about being a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming about being a girl. Butterfly weather today.

  10. Butterflies do have an interesting perspective but when I've sat and watched them, they never fly in a straight line - the flit and flutter, undecided as to the direction to take. First one way then back then at a right angle then up and down. They are definitely without limits and enjoy flight.

  11. Lovely. I told my mom before she passed last year that whenever I saw a butterfly or a dragonfly I would think of her as they are beautiful and a symbol of change.... Thanks for sharing the beautiful poem.

  25. Nice poem, Blogoratti! I can tell your little visitor intrigued and inspired you. To be free as a butterfly sounds nice but to live life as an insect wouldn't be too good. :D Thanks for popping over to dance with me! Have a good week!!

  26. The idea that a butterflies seemingly insignificant flap of wings can eventually have such a major impact speaks to the fact that even in our smallest acts of kindness to others (offering a cup of cold water, a smile, a word of encouragement) can have a never-ending ripple effect in this world.
    Beautiful, reflective, imaginative poem!
    Blessings!

  31. Time spent watching butterflies fly by is not time wasted. Time not spent enjoying the beauty as they go about their business is time wasted.

I enjoyed your poem, Blogorati. It caused me to smile and to feel at peace. And yes...I wouldn't mind at all being a butterfly for a day (or more) dancing from flower to flower, without a care. :)

  34. Don't remember a butterfly entering my home, but I well remember the butterflies at the Valley of Butterflies in the greek island of Rhodes ; a magnificient sight!
Your lovely poem takes me back to the versatility of color, the virtuosity and freedom of movement that these tiny creatures have exhibited, and makes me wish I have the chance to see them often and admire them.

  38. I so enjoyed fluttering around with this butterfly, though I did worry it might hit the wall. Ellen said something cute the other day on tv. She wondered what butterflies feel in their stomach when they get nervous. Maybe they get humans, lol.
