How The 80/20 Principle Can Be Life Changing

Quote of the day:

He who needs mercy finds it. -Rumi

There exists imbalances in life especially with work and life. How do we go about fixing that. With the pandemic there came a shift. A new way of thinking, of observing, of self reflection. But only for a short time. Things are mostly back to normal now. The opportunity to have a discussion about work-life balance has slipped away. For a brief moment in history workers had power and a healthy balance of work and life. They learned to say no, to communicate boundaries, and to focus on their wellbeing. Fast forward to now. Have we learned anything or are we doomed to past behaviour?

The Pareto Principle or better known as the 80-20 rule states that 20% of your activities will result in 80% of your results. In other words, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of causes. I believe the origin of this principle dates back to Italian society where it was observed that 80% of the wealth belonged to only 20% of the population.

This principle and uneven distribution can be observed around us. Our daily routine and interactions all point to it. You probably spend 80% of your time on things that are familiar, and 80/20 mindset might help cut out all distracting elements and keep you grounded. In business for instance, it can be said that about 20% of customers account for 80% of sales and profits. Of course the business will focus on the 20%. Applying that to life, we can therefore put all our effort into the 20% of things that will give us better returns. It helps to know what is of vital importance and what is not.
